The series In the Blink of an Eye comprises the Snow, the Sparkle, the Cloud, Father, and an ongoing work composed of approximately 2,000 small monitors; with the exception of Father, all the photos were produced in Canada. In three works―the Snow, the Sparkle, and the Cloud―10,000 different black-and-white images of the title object were put together as a huge collage (3 m x 4 m) in the same way as the ImageCity series. In addition to these large works, Snow includes 50 photographs of snow measuring 150 cm x 150 cm. Father is, however, different from these works. Father, a collage of black-and-white portraits of the artist’s father, ended up displaying about one-third of the proposed 10,000 portraits and two-thirds blank spaces because his father passed away before the work was completed. Every single tiny object in each work, all of which appear and disappear in the blink of an eye, reflects an ephemeral individual life, suggesting the evanescence and transience of the human condition. Although Park, HongChun sees numerous natural phenomena through his camera, what he eventually captures in this series is immaterial time, a recurring subject. While the Trace series illustrates the weightiness of eternity and the traces of humans haunting the memory of time, In the Blink of an Eye is filled with fleeting moments―the landscapes of an instant. In this sense, Park’s reflective and philosophical landscapes are based on the tradition of the oriental landscape in which the realistic depiction of nature is often considered inferior to the philosophical depth accomplished through aesthetic meditation on nature.
