The photographs from the series Trace were taken on the seashores of Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. In Australia, so far from his home country both psychologically and physically, the artist had an opportunity to reflect on death―a reflection that was directly evoked by the deaths of his mother and a friend. While the series To Alice... … explores the border between reality and unreality, the source of this series lies in questions concerning life and death, presence and absence. These photos, the compositions of sky, sea and benches, look empty, but are filled with traces of whole things, including time, that haunt the location, reflecting one of epigrams in the Heart Sutra: “Form is no other than emptiness, emptiness no other than form.” Eventually, contradictory concepts such as life and death, presence and absence, and endurance and evanescence merge together in this work midway between fullness and emptiness. The longer the duration of exposure, the less “noise” in the photograph. In this purified screen, only time accumulated from the immemorial past and its memories hover silently, inviting viewers to experience a moment of being alone in an apocalyptic scene that is not appalling, but tranquil.
